THE NATIONAL ATAXIA FOUNDATION 53RD ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

Happy New Year! I'm happy to report that Richard is doing well and adhering to his PT and exercise regime. His appetite is good and his choking spells infrequent.

We recently received an email about the National Ataxia Foundation (NAF) Annual Membership Meeting 2010 and would like to share it with you. The meeting will be held in Chicago from March 12th to 14th, 2010. We have attended the annual meetings for the last two years and have enjoyed them tremendously.

thank you for sharing your story, a family member is struggling with cerebellar ataxia and we are considering stem cell treatment. I'm wondering if you would recommend going to China for same, and also whether you received fetal stem cells or your own were used?

also my family are hopeful about a march 2010 study suggesting riluzole may help treat cerebellar ataxia, which may be something to talk to your family doctor about? here is a link

We can neither encourage nor discourage patients from seeking stem cell treatment in China. Everyone case is different. You must evaluate your own situation to come to the decision. Our only advice is to do plenty of research and ask lots of questions. It looks like you are already doing that.

We were told that Richard received injections of stem cells from the umbilical cord of infants during his treatment in China.

The best of luck to you and your loved one.

Thank you for the information about Riluzole. Richard's neurologist at UCLA, Dr. Susan Perlman, also mentioned this drug to us during our visit with her last week. There seems to be a lot of interest after the study done in Italy. We are cautiously optimistic and watching for further developments.
